A couple years ago I took a trip with my sister, and this year I took a trip with my mom. No kid in tow, just me getting away to spend some time with my extended family. I love it. I didn’t get to know my extended family as a child. I wish I had. I have some really cool relatives! And this year I got to meet 2 of my mom’s best friends from high school. They also are pretty cool! ;-) I realize how blessed my own child is that she really knows her grandparents, aunt, and cousins. (I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous.)
Family is so important. You just can’t lose touch. Especially the upcoming generations! There is so much to be learned and passed down to future generations. I love to sit and chat with my grandparents. They are very wise and I have learned so much from them in the last few years. Some people absolutely dread visiting their relatives, especially the “old” ones. They’re gonna miss out is all I have to say.
I think I have been successful in teaching my own child how important family is. She looks forward to her summer trips to see her grandmothers. (Although she comes home totally exhausted! Lol!) Her grandparents are completely different though, so she has the opportunity to learn SO many things. And appreciate so many things. She gets very frequent visits with her cousins. One is totally attached to her. I think that will never change. ;-)
I am sitting in Minnesota right now as I type this in a Word doc. My grandparents don’t keep the internet on. I think that’s not such a bad thing. To be disconnected from technology (and sometimes the crazy world). There’s more time to talk to each other. Enjoy the world outside the window. Last night my mom and I stayed up late talking and working with yarn. (I’m working on socks, and she started a dish cloth.) It was so nice to not be on the phone (although that’s nice too, “in person” is better.) We talked about how we could live such a simple lifestyle because we appreciate “the simple things”. My dd fits right in there too. Maybe next time we’ll all be there working on yarn together. ;-)
This week has been just awesome for me. Some people don’t change much. I have though, and so I’m glad my family is getting to know ME. I just feel so blessed right now to be sitting here in my grandparents kitchen waiting on some more relatives to arrive.
